Twenty weeks of 20 prizes to celebrate 20 years of banking — that's what Security National Bank (SNB) in Dakota Dunes is doing.

SNB first extended its reach into South Dakota in1997, locating initially in Dakota Dunes. After 20 years, a new building and a flood, SNB is still in the Dunes and has even extended its branch to two more offices in Sioux Falls.

It all began inside an office on the third floor of the IBP building on May 1, 1997.

"When we opened, we were primarily trust administration," Vice President and Trust Officer Richard Kunz said. "There were four of us that started on the third floor of that office building — three of us are still with the bank — and once the retail side really started to take off, we realized we needed those retail amenities, safety deposit boxes, a drive-through and those kind of things. So after five years in the office building, we built this space [located at 325 Dakota Dunes Blvd.].”

Kunz has been with the bank for 31 years, the last 20 in the Dunes. His title hasn't changed much in the last 20 years. He still manages the office from the wealth management standpoint.

Janelle Noreen has been with the bank for 26 years, 14 of those in the Dunes. She has advanced through the ranks of the bank, starting as a part-time teller. Beginning her career as teller, she was promoted to personal banking, mortgage and now is manager of the branch and mortgage lender. She currently resides at McCook Lake and is in love with South Dakota.

"It's good to be in the community and be a face in the community so that people know you and are comfortable doing business with you," she said.

Kunz has been working for SNB so long that he is know working with third generations in families.

"That's what drives our banks," Kunz said. "People in baking institutions are famous for saying we've got a great service culture and all of that. But I really believe that -- and I sensed it since day one. … There's a right way and a wrong way, and the right way takes care of the clients and the people."
